How long does it take to see nitrite while cycling?

This is my first tank. It's a 29 gallon tropical freshwater tank. I've had the tank set up for a month now and I'm only seeing 1 ppm of ammonia. It's been at 1 ppm and hasn't gone above or below that ever since I started getting a reading a few days after it was set up. The tank reads zero nitrites and I haven't bothered to test for nitrate for that reason. I didn't really know about the cycling process beforehand so, yeah, I messed up and I'm doing the cycling process with fish. They consist of 2 black tetra, 3 zebra danios, and 3 pristella tetra. With that many fish I would think I would see higher levels. I've only done maybe 2 15% water changes (with treated water) when i first got the tank. Nothing in the past 2 - 2 1/2 weeks. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal? Thanks.
