Can a trademarked name be trademarked by someone else for a different application?

Trademarks don't go through some master database. Unregistered trademarks can be ascribed virtually at will, but enforcement is largely subjective and needs to be demonstrable. The Wikipedia article on trademarks gives a pretty good outline of this.
