What ges do scientists think were common in the early Earth, making abiogenesis impossible?!?

There is a gas that more then any other gas present in the Archean Eon vented by volcanoes, that made it totally impossible for the simpliest of hydrocarbons to stay together, let alone for extremely complex molecular structures like those found in RNA and DNA to evolve!!! What gas was in the early atmosphere that made evolution impossible???
