Realistic views on 2012?

I'm not looking for religious views on this. I don't really believe in. It, but with all the recents world disasters since january i'm getting a little wary. I'm 20, i'm not some young naive kid. I just want to know IF its real, and where the prophecy comes from? Wasn't it the mayans calander?
